Overtime is only right if the hours are.

Your overtime pay depends on every hour you actually worked. If you work on a computer, Voltti counts your real hours for you, in every app and work website, and stops when you step away. No timer to start or stop, so the number you check your paycheck against is right.

How it works

How overtime pay is calculated.

  1. Add up your hours for the week. If you only have start and end times, the work hours calculator adds them up with breaks taken out.
  2. Split regular and overtime hours. Hours up to 40 are regular. Hours over 40 are overtime.
  3. Work out the overtime rate. Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, overtime pays $30 an hour.
  4. Add the two together. Regular hours times your rate, plus overtime hours times the overtime rate, is your gross pay before taxes and deductions.

Example: you earn $20 an hour and work 46 hours. That is 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours. 40 × $20 + 6 × $30 = $800 + $180 = $980. Spread over 46 hours, that is about $21.30 an hour.

The default follows the US federal rule. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states, such as California, also have daily overtime, and some jobs are exempt, so check your state's rules and your contract. This calculator gives an estimate, not legal or payroll advice.

FAQ

Overtime, answered.

How do I calculate overtime pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply that by your overtime hours. Add your regular pay to get your total. Enter your rate and hours above and the calculator does it for you.

What is time and a half?

Time and a half means 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. If you earn $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour.

When does overtime start?

Under the federal FLSA, overtime starts after 40 hours in a workweek for non-exempt employees. Some states also count daily overtime. California, for example, has overtime after 8 hours in a day. This calculator only uses a weekly limit, so check your state's rules if you work long days.

What is double time?

Double time is 2 times your regular rate. Federal law does not require it, but some states, employers and union contracts pay it after a set number of hours. Turn on double time above and set when it starts.

Why is my paycheck different from this?

This shows gross pay before taxes and deductions. Your employer may also include some bonuses or commissions in your regular rate, use a different workweek, or follow state daily rules, and any of these can change the total.

Is my data saved anywhere?

Your numbers stay in your browser so they're still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is there a way to track my hours automatically?

If you work on a computer, yes. Voltti for Mac and Voltti for Windows record every real minute in your apps and work websites, with no timer to start or stop. The free plan includes automatic tracking.
