How it works

How the Pomodoro Technique works.

Francesco Cirillo came up with the Pomodoro Technique in the late 1980s as a university student, using a tomato shaped kitchen timer. Pomodoro is Italian for tomato. The idea is simple: work in short, timed rounds and rest on purpose in between.

  1. Pick one task. Decide what you will work on before the timer starts.
  2. Focus for 25 minutes. Work on that task only until the chime. If something else comes up, write it down and get back to it later.
  3. Take a 5 minute break. Stand up, stretch, get a drink. Step away from the screen if you can.
  4. Repeat. Each focus round is one pomodoro.
  5. Take a longer break after 4 rounds. 15 to 30 minutes, then start a new set.

25 and 5 are the classic numbers, not a rule. Many people prefer 50 minutes of focus with 10 minute breaks. Set your own times above.

FAQ

Pomodoro timer, answered.

How long is a pomodoro?

The classic length is 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5 minute break. After 4 rounds you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. This timer starts with 25, 5 and 15, and you can change all three.

Does the timer keep running in a background tab?

Yes. The timer works from the time each round ends, not by counting ticks, so it stays accurate when you switch tabs. The countdown shows in the tab title, and a soft chime plays when a round ends. Browsers slow down background tabs, so the title and chime can lag a little after a long time away.

Can I get a notification when a round ends?

Yes. Click Notify me and allow notifications when your browser asks. The page never asks on its own. You can turn notifications off again with the same button.

What does Skip do?

Skip ends the current round and moves to the next one. A skipped focus round doesn't count toward today's rounds or toward your long break.

What's the difference between a Pomodoro timer and a focus timer?

A focus timer is any timer you use to protect a block of work. A Pomodoro timer is a focus timer with a set rhythm: focus rounds, short breaks and a long break after every few rounds.

Is my data saved anywhere?

Your times, sound setting and today's round count stay in your browser so they're still there when you come back. Nothing is sent to a server.

Is there a way to track my focus time automatically?

If you work on a computer, yes. Voltti for Mac and Voltti for Windows record every real minute in your apps and work websites, with no timer to start or stop. The free plan includes automatic tracking.
